  1. Your parents, community, and peers will influence
Chanda lives in a poor neighbor hood her father and brothers died and her step fathers have not been good you. In order to overcome a circumstance you have to work for it and don't give up or loose hope. even though Chandas future seems hopeless she feels that she can change it so she goes to school and helps her mother with the family.

  2. Chanda's life is shaped off of her family. In my life if I really want something I have to work hard to get it. Chanda learned she has to work hard and give it her all the get what she wants. In order to over things you have to work hard and give your all into everything she does. Chanda spends a lot of her time praying that things will work out okay. Chanda does not have the best life but I think she can work hard to make it change.

  3. Our surroundings influence our life majorly. We treat people the way our parents treat each other. So if our parents treat each other nice we will treat each other nice and vice versa. Also whatever religion our parents are we are too. We are able to over come things in our by (say in school) studying hard for tests to get an A. Also we are able to get a job because our parents pay for our education so we are able to get great jobs.

  4. Chanda has been through allot and it has shaped her. In my own life I have grown up seeing what I call normal. I think having one mom and one dad and sometimes parents get remarried or divorced but its normal to have one mother and dad. On the other hand Chanda has grown up with her mom marrying at least 4 other men. That is what she has grown up and thinks is normal. What we see and life as well as follow is what we learned. I have formed my own beliefs to achieve things in my life. I do what I believe in and follow through with what I believe in, and don't give up. I get past obsitcals to achieve my goals. Chanda has done this with many things to overcome her goals, such as when she set up her little sisters funeral all on her own.She told her mom she would and she was in charge of it so she did it and achieved her goal.(Stratton 67)

  5. Chanda's family, friends, and neighbors have made her a product of her surroundings. Same with me. For example, in Africa it is hard and unlikely for women to have jobs. Here, in Hinsdale, many women have jobs. This is because in Chanda's community, women are like housewives and are expected to stay home. Here, women can be housewives, but many have jobs. This is because our community, family, and friends do these things or know people that do these things and we just follow the crowd. But, Chanda is still her own person, like me. For example, even though her friend Esther doesn't go to school, she does because she wants to be educated. She still has the ability to chose her own path. Even though her life is tough right now, she can make herself a great future and have a better life.

  6. Chanda obviously lives in a much poorer and more dangerous environment than my peers and me. The poverty that she was born into certainly creates the person she is. Although this isn't ideal for people at all, I believe it helps her determination in the long run, due to the confidence she gains with just one compliment or motivation. I think her awful surroundings make her the bright girl she is. For example, when Chanda's teacher tells her mom how Chanda is the best student he's had, she lights up and is determined to keep it that way.
