DISCUSSION QUESTION #1

1.       Why is there poverty? Write passages from the book that give evidence provide page numbers, and analyze the passage.

  1. A lot of people in Africa suffer from poverty in many ways. First, many people get so sick that they can not work. This means that they have no monthly income of money so they live off of what they have saved. Second,Page 75 shows each family can hardly survive off of what they have. They don't have a lot of clean water and food. They can only eat what they have.Page 5 shows they don't have clean water. Page 64 shows that the children have to help the parents out because they have such large families. This might be why they live in poverty because they have so many people they have to take care of.

  2. Poverty will always be present due to the differences of salaries between jobs throughout the world. Not every occupation will offer large amounts of money, let alone sustainable incomes. Also the husband tends to be the parent that goes out to work to supply the family with money and if the family doesn't have enough money to pay a baby-sitter, then the mom must stay home. In page 5, the novel states that Chanda's step-papa has odd jobs and her mom sells chickens from time to time, but they have three children to take care of. This doesn't bring in enough money, causing poverty.

  3. Africa is full of poverty, Like in the story. Chanda's family cant even afford a telephone, so they have to use a neighbors. Also In the book many people become sick and are not able to get jobs so they become poor and there is another person who suffers from poverty. Chanda's school can not afford internet, or textbooks for everyone. In the book there is only one parent that works because the other must say home with the children, so they get less income.

  4. On page. 14 a man from the company Chanda's papa worked at came over to her house and said "Nothing can replace your husband or sons, but the company wants to offer you a little money to get you on your feet again." This shows that he knows that once you lose a loved one it is hard to get back on your feet because there is no more income. This shows that poverty occurs in places because when adults lose their jobs or lives and don't have good income they become poor. Lack of jobs equals lack of money which equals poverty for many.

  5. I thought the whole part of the book that consisted of Chandra's family and herself moving around from one home to another due to something happening in the family. I think this is why they are so poor. Once the whole family has started to settle in, they find something has happened (someone dies, pedophile etc.). They then are forced to move somewhere else. It also might not help that there are 3 children as well as the mother herself. You can find these stories on page 18-24 approximately. Another great reason as to why people might be so poor, is just due to location. It can be at times, very tough to get something started in Africa and be able to hold onto your wealth. I think that maybe some of the reasons why there is poverty is due to the fact that there are lots of diseases, and people don't have the technology to solve the problems. All of these are reasons as to why there is poverty in Africa

  6. Chanda still has her education. On page.55 her teacher tells her that she is her favorite student. This shows that she might have a chance of a education when others don't.

  7. Poverty is presented throughout the book. On page 14, it talks about how Chanda and her family do not have any money left over to spend on essentials. This is because her father and brothers died and they were the only people who were earning money to support the family. Also, people are born into poverty like Soly and Iris and they cannot change that fact. Another reason why poeverty is present is in chapter 18, pages 86-94. Chanda's mother is very ill from the poor living circumstances and it is very costly if she wants to become well again. Sickness that spreads through Africa is also playing a role in poeverty.
